It's Time for Adulting

So we’ve talked about finding employment as an individual with autism, but what about services for adults with autism that may need different resources? Fortunately, in Maryland there are many services for adults with autism.

Because autism is such a wide spectrum there needs to be a variety of services offered, not just for little kids, but even for adults. First, in Maryland there is the Autism Program Planning Success for Employment. This is usually a small group that will help individuals with autism develop employment readiness skills. Not sure if this program is right for you? The individuals at APPS will conduct an assessment to make sure that it is a good fit!

Another option for individuals with autism in Maryland is utilizing the Pathways program! This unique program is supported by DORS and two and four year state colleges. Individuals in this program can enroll in a college credit or certificate program by registering through Disability Support Services (DSS) through their college. This program will help the individual adjust to college life and received specialized services as a college student. They will also receive career exploration guidance to help make sure that their skills and interests align with their career goals.

So you register for classes, you get the dream job.... How do you get there? Well if you dont have your drivers license, but want to pursue it, DORS will work with you to determine if you need additional supports to drive safely. If you need adaptive equipment or have specific driving needs, DORS can help you work with the MVA’s Driver Wellness and Safety Division, so you can get your license! You can also take drivers education courses through DORS, which includes behind the wheel training. These classes are specifically designed for individuals with autism!

If the traditional workplace does not seem like a good fit, individuals may also utilize Day Program services. Many day programs work to enable individuals with autism to have meaningful opportunities both in their homes and in the community. They may provide strategies for their families as well. Usually, day programs include planned activities such as art programs, technology programs, in-house work opportunities, and community outings.  Many day programs even partner with group home services, should you need living accommodations. There are several day programs in each county, so it is important to review which one has the activities that seem most interesting to you.

These are just some resources in the state of Maryland for adults with autism! Autism looks different for each person, so it is important to sit down with your family and determine what resource makes the most sense for you! Stay tuned for our final blog in our autism series next week!
